Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Mathematics at Olivet Nazarene University is to develop in its students the characteristics of logical and analytical thinking, an appreciation of the beauty of mathematical structures, and problem solving skills needed for career and personal achievement.  This mission includes instruction in mathematics for the liberal arts, instruction in mathematics in support of other disciplines, and instruction in advanced mathematics for departmental majors.

The objectives for each of the three levels that the Department serves are:

Level for Liberal Arts

  • To understand that mathematics is consistent and that there is a logical explanation for mathematical results.
  • To develop an appreciation for the use of mathematics in everyday life beyond the level of simple arithmetic (e.g. finance applications).
  • To be able to use mathematics (beyond simple arithmetic) to solve practical problems.
  • To prepare the student to take a course in statistics.

Level for Supporting Courses and Lower Level Courses for Majors

  • To understand that mathematics is a logical, deductive system.
  • To develop an appreciation for the use and power of mathematics in everyday life and for its use in specific academic disciplines.
  • To be able to use mathematics in specific applications, particularly as it relates to the student’s discipline.

Level for Advanced Mathematics Majors

  • To understand the abstract nature of a mathematical system, consisting of undefined terms, axioms, definitions, and theorems; and to understand the logic that knits the system together.
  • To understand the power of mathematical abstraction and the universality of its applications.
  • To be able to use mathematics to pursue professional goals, whether in teaching, industry, or graduate studies.
